Strike action planned in response to economic problems

Updated: 3 days ago

South African Federation of Trade Unions has given notice to NEDLAC that they plan to embark on a nationwide strike on Wednesday the 24th of February 2021. The main grievances they plan to focus on during the strike are:

  • The construction of a new economy – including a minimum wage of R12,500 a month for all workers, and a moratorium on all job losses;

  • The improvement of living conditions and the redistribution of land;

  • The cutting of greenhouse gas emissions;

  • Raising the social wage and providing public healthcare finance;

  • Free, decolonised and high-quality public education;

  • An end to corruption and crime;

  • A non-racial, non-sexist, democratic, socialist society.

The strike action calls for a mass stay away of workers. Protest marches are planned in all major cities as well as a march to the National Assembly in Cape Town. Coincidently Minister Tito Mboweni will be giving the budget speech on the same day as the planned strike.
