National Minimum Wage and your exemption status

It is important to note that if you have previously applied for exemption from the National Minimum Wage, you will have to reapply for exemption from the increase as soon as possible.


According to section 15 of the National Minimum Wage Act an exemption may not be granted for longer than one year. This means your exemption status will come to an end on the 29th of February 2020.


The new minimum wage increase will become effective from 1 March 2020 and your exemption status for 2019 will no longer be valid. If you have not applied for a new exemption status, you will have to conform to the minimum wages set out for 2020.
